Book Two of Five in The New World Series

Melanie Adams and Axel Chambers have to get out of Chicago. After the successful destruction of one of the government's largest projects, the two assassins soon become the most wanted terrorists in the New World.

A new recruit to the Resistance gives the duo information that the once successful resistance group in another city is having its missions sabotaged, and it appears to be the doing of one of the group's own members. Melanie and Axel set out for the city, vowing to find the person responsible.

Escaping Chicago is dangerous enough, and the trip to the new city tests the two rebels in more ways than one. Once in Indianapolis, they soon find the line between hero and villain isn't always so clearly defined.

The Betrayal A Book of the New World Volume 2 Rosie Scott 9781479253531 Books

Any fears of the so-called sophomore slump are laid to waste early on in The Betrayal, the second entry in Rosie Scott's The New World series. Scott does a sequel right--she creates a narrative with enough familiarity to tie it cleanly to her previous effort, but she alters the tone, pace and intensity enough so that it stands apart. Although slightly shorter in length, it also feels bigger, charged with action and mystery as it raises the stakes on protagonist Melanie Adams and her fellow rebel assassin and soulmate Axel Chambers.

One of the strongest aspects of The Resistance was the way that Scott unfolded the nightmarish totalitarian world, giving it large, suffocating context while clarifying the way that small and intimate details of everyday life were affected. With that largely out of way, the temptation to mourn its now-secondary role disappears once she begins adding details. Among them, the revelation of a lack of music in society--as simple and universal to humanity as about anything else--and a look into the horrific town squares where enemies of the state are mutilated and hung as both trophies and warnings.

Rather than linger on reiterations of the crippling state of the country, though, Scott spends most of the story plunging ahead. The pace is often frenzied, as her intrepid heroes move from one city to another, collecting tokens and building the body count, seeking to inspire a new pocket of the resistance and to root out a traitor in their midst. Once again, the toll of human life is not presented as cathartic, blood-sated victory; the writer makes sure that all of the gory (sometimes very gory) details are portrayed, and the characters react in complex ways to them.

New characters are introduced, some of them quite effectively--including fellow resistance members Isaac and Cedric--but this chapter remains largely centered on Melanie and Axel, both of whom are explored in even deeper layers. Scott's unique twist on conventional narrative voice makes them an interesting pair, one not inclined to doing the expected things. Having a reliable (and likable) duo at the center amplifies the bristling action, giving the reader an emotional core as the blood spills and the risk and cost amplifies.

Familiarity with the first book is, of course, necessary to enjoying this dystopian adventure, but at this point, all of the intriguing elements are coalescing into something memorable and gripping.

The author does a spectacular job of captivating you. I feel connected to the characters and live their journey. Can't wait for the next book in the series!
I recently finished this book and have started the 3rd in the series. I find myself thinking about the characters during the day while I'm at work and wondering what's going to happen next. I am really enjoying them, considering it's not my usual genre. I read a Stephen King quote that I think applies here "Few things are better than an engrossing, well-written story that doesn't try too hard to impress you." What he said. )
